John Nugent Fitch (1840-1927)

​

John Nugent Fitch was born in England in 1840. His uncle Walter Hood Fitch was a well known botanical artist and taught him how to draw. Fitch followed in his uncle’s footsteps as he became interested in plants and the accuracy that is necessary for botanical drawing. 

​

He is best known for his contribution of 528 plates to The Orchid Album, a landmark work of eleven volumes published between 1872 and 1897. Fitch also contributed to Curtis's Botanical Magazine starting in 1878, and was inducted into the Linnean Society in 1877.
